The Kidnapping

By Diana

Part One

Dani is thirteen and has a twin sister, Beatrice (Beat for short). Dani is short for Danelli. Tuesday, October 14th, Dani was in her room with her sister.

"Beat, can you please turn your music down? I have to concentrate," said Dani.

"You concentrate! Ha, now that is a first!" replied Beat with a finger pointing at Dani. Dani stuck out her tongue at Beat.

"Dani, what are you doing?"

"I am just thinking of what to write for English."

"I know what you could write:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I have a twin
And I hate her too.
"

"Beat, this is serious," replied Dani getting angier, "so leave me ALONE!" Looking up she noticed Beat was trying on a dress, "No, that is not you."

"How would you know? You don't even know what is fashionable," retorted Beat.

"I am outta here," and Dani got up and she slammed the door behind her. Dani went downstairs and yelled at her mom, "Mom, I am going for a walk."

"Ok, be careful and I want to talk to you later," replied her mom, Ang.

"Oh great, let's blame me for everything," Dani mumbled to herself.

Dani needed to get out for a while and clear her head. She decided to go to the park and back. However, when Dani got to the park the sun was just setting, so Dani decided to watch it set before she went home.

Dani didn't hear anyone behind her until she heard a man say, "A lovely sunset, isn't it?"

Dani wanted to see who was behind her. She turned around and she was looking directly into the barrell of a gun. The man said:

"I've been watching you for a very long time. So, you finally got rid of your sister, heh?"

"Yeah, I guess so. I am going to leave now," and she got up to go.

"Oh no, you aren't!" replied the man and he grabbed Dani by her hair. He took her to a waiting van, and he continued, "Don't you even think of making a noise because I'll keep you longer and hurt you worse."

Dani followed this man into the van. She was hoping someone would notice them and call the police.

When they got into the van, the man put a blindfold over her eyes, a gag into her mouth and tied her wrists together. The man got into the driver's seat and started the engine. He pulled away from the edge of the park. He was able to get out of the town and on to the road without any problems occuring. At one point, Dani heard sirens and she began to feel relieved; however, the sirens went right by them and on to another emergency.

Dani was thinking, "This an emergency! I don't know if I will live or die. Help! Help me, please!"

At on point along the road, the man stopped the van and got out. He had got some fast food and he said to Dani:

"I got you some food, but it seems you are busy right now," and he snickered at the remark. He didn't give any food to Dani.

All of a sudden the van came to a sudden halt causing Dani to fly on to the floor of the van.

The man said, "We're here!" The man opened the van door and guided Dani to a barn. He guided her by having one hand holing onto her hair and the other hand was on her butt. Dani was trying to talk but nothing understandable came out because of the gag.

The man stopped and opened the door. Dani tried to run away, but she didn't get that far because she trip over a rock, fell and knocked her head on the ground. The man was laughing at Dani and saying:

"Boy, she just made it a lot easier for me." With that he picked her up from the ground and carried her into the barn. He placed her onto a chair and tied her down. He tied her wrist to the chair along with her feet. However, he didn't want any movement from her, so he put a rope around Dani stomach to the back of the chair. After Dani was tied down, the man undid her pants and stuck his hand down her pants so he could feel her. Dani was still out at this time.

Before the man left the barn, he said, "Have fun tonight it is supposed to get mighty cold." With that he left and it was ten o'clock in the evening.

Back at the house, Beat was becoming very worried. Beat knows that Dani does not like to be out too late. Also, Dani had not been home to finish her schoolwork, which was not like her. Beat decided to go downstairs to find out where Dani went.

"Mom, is Dani with you? Or do you know where she is? I am quite worried."

"No, I thought she was upstairs with you," said Ang.

"Well I know she does not like to be out late and we do have school tomorrow," said Beat twidling her fingers. She does this when she is nervous or worried.

"Do you want to call a bunch of your friends? She may be over at one of their houses."

"I'll try, but I am sure she would have told one of us where she was going," Beat went upstairs. She dialled all of her friends, then all of Dani's friends. There was no success.

Beat went downstairs and said, "Everyone said the last time they say her was after school. Mom, I am worried. I think something serious has happened to Dani."

Ang replied, "How about if I call the hospital to see if she is there?" There was no success. Ang thought of something and she turned to Beat, "Do you want to come with me and drive around to look for her?"

"Sure, I guess," replied Beat. On the way out, she also grabbed the cell phone in case they needed it.

Beat got out to the car and helped Ang by putting Ang's wheelchair into the trunk of the car. They drove around the block and also around other blocks in the town. They drove around the park too, but they was no sign of Dani anywhere. After an hour of driving, they decided to go home for the night.

They would have called the police, but Beat and Ang knew the police wouldn't do anything for approximately twenty-four hours.

They decided the most they could do was to sleep. However, they both knew they couldn't sleep. They both were worried and they sat up through most of the night talking and thinking about Dani.

Ang asked, "Did you guys have a fight or something like that? 'Cause I heard Dani slamming the door pretty loud early."

"No, not really. We just argue like any other sisters would," replied Beat.

They decided around four in the morning to get some sleep. Ang has work and Beat has school in the morning.

In the morning, Beat just made it to homeroom on time. The homeroom teacher noticed that Dani was not with Beat. She asked, "Beatrice, where is Danelli?"

Beat shuddered at the calling of her name. Beat does not like being called 'Beatrice'. Beat decided to go up to the teacher and she said, "Dani didn't come home last night."

"Oh, I am sorry," replied the teacher, in shock. "I'll tell the other teachers that Dani will not be attending classes today."

"Thank you," replied Beat with relief.

*********************************************

Dani woke up in the morning and she was cold. All she was wearing was a light sweater from when she left last night. She did not know where she was and what happened. She was having a hard time breathing and she noticed that she had a gag in her mouth. Also, she noticed that she could not move at all except for her neck. Dani felt quite hungry.

Dani heard a door open.

"Hello," said the man. He came closer and again he put his hand down Dani's pants. Dani tried to scream. He took his hand out of her pants. He asked, "Are you cold, sweetie pie?"

Dani nodded and was trying to figure out why he called her 'sweetie pie'.

He slapped Dani across the face and said, "Too bad, you bitch." He picked up Dani's chair and threw it against a wall. It knocked Dani out again. Again, he picked up the chair and took it outside. It was pouring rain and it was not any warmer than being in the barn.

He left Dani in the rain and he went inside his house.

After a while Dani woke up again and she had a splitting headache. She did not know who the man was and she was wondering why she was getting hurt.

During the day, Dani was trying to listen to the traffic going by to figure out if this was a busy road or not. According to Dani's ears, there was very little traffic.

Dani was outside in the rain for the whole day. She had to go to the washroom during the day, and thought it was pointless waiting for the man to come. So she went in her pants. Well, she had nowhere else to go because she was strapped into the chair.

In the evening, the man came back and carried her inside the barn. He said:

"You are probably wondering who I am. Well, I am your father and I want some money because I was held away from you during your growing up years. I wrote a ransom note demanding money. If the ransom note is not fulfilled I will keep you for the rest of your life. How does that sound? To me that sounds very fair."

Dani was thinking, "My father! Why would he do this to me if I am his daughter? And you left us, our mom even told us this. You were allowed to see us but you never came by once. We were never held away from you." Dani was in shock from what her so-called father said and from the cold.

The father left in the van with the ransom note and went to Dani's place.

Beat couldn't concentrate in school because she was quite worried about Dani. As soon as the dismissal bell went, Beat jumped up and ran home, hoping to find Dani there.

However, that wish did not come true. Beat came home and she was very disappointed that Dani was not there.

Beat said to herself, "I should call the police and see if they can do anything."

Beat did call and the police officer, Constable Wong, wanted to know the age of Dani.

"Thirteen," replied Beat, "and, ma'am, I am really worried about my sister."

Constable Wong said, "We will put in a missing child report. We need some more information, though. Would you be willing to come down to the police station to give us the rest of the info?"

"Sure I will," replied Beat. She hung up, wrote a note to her mom that stated where she was going, and she hopped on to her bike to get to the police station.

Beat got to the police station and asked for Constable Wong. Conbstable Wong came out of an office and asked, "Are the girl that wants to file a missing child report?"

"Yes, Ma'am, that is me," replied Beat.

"Come on into my office," Constable said, and she led the way into her office. She continued after she sat down, "What does this person look like?"

Beat answered confidently, "I am her identical twin. The only difference between us, is that she has a small, brown mole under her right eye. As you can see, I have a mole, but mine is under my chin, on the left side."

"May I measure you to get the height of your sister? And I want to get your eye colour. Also, I want to find out what she was wearing before she disappear."

"Our eye colour is brown and Dani was wearing a yellow sweater and jeans. She, also, wore her sneakers outside. And, yes, you may measure me," replied Beat.

"Wow, you are a smart girl, is your sister just as smart?" asked Constable Wong.

"Actually, she is a bit smarter than me. She is, also, good in sports, but I am very good in the fine arts area. Some people say I am a talented drawer." Constable Wong was taking Beat's height and writing it down.

"How did you get down here, Miss?" asked Constable Wong.

"I rode my bike, Ma'am," replied Beat.

"Would you like to have a ride home in a police cruiser?"

"Really? Wow, I would love to!!!" replied an excited Beat. She began to feel better, but was still worried about Dani.

Constable Wong gave Beat a ride home in the police officer's cruiser. Beat enjoyed it a lot and Constable Wong confirmed that the police will look into Dani's situation.

The cruiser stopped in front of Beat's house and Constable Wong said, "If you get any information or anything about Dani, do not be afraid to call me or any of the other officers. We are here to help and I am glad you told us about Dani. Take care."

"Thank you Constable Wong, and I will," replied Beat. Beat got her bike out of the vehicle and saw that Ang was at the door waiting for her to come in.

Beat ran up to Ang, after she had put her bike away, and said, "The constable said she is going to file a missing child report and if we find out any more information about Dani, we are supposed to call the police. They said they are going to help us mom. They are!" She gave her mom a hug and ran upstairs to get changed into her everyday clothing.

Ang had supper on the table and she set Dani's place, even though she knew Dani wouldn't be home for supper. Ang and Beat had supper.

After supper, Beat had homework to do but just couldn't concentrate with an empty bed beside her. She was so used to seeing Dani there doing homework, too. Beat felt a tear rolling down her cheek. She started to cry. Beat really wanted her sister there.

Beat went downstairs, there was Ang crying at the kitchen table. They both had tears in their eyes. Beat ran up and sat down on Ang's lap and they both hugged each other. They began to cry all over again.

"Mom, I love you, and I love Dani. I want her back, and I never want to leave you," cried Beat.

"I love you, too, and I want Dani back just as much as you do," sobbed Ang.

They both sat there for a very long time and cried on one another's shoulders. At this time, they needed each other for the comfort.

Around ten o'clock that night, they decided to get to bed early. They were both really tired. Beat went upstairs and Ang went to her room.

At midnight, the doorbell rang. Beat ran down the stairs and went to the door. She looked out the peep hole and saw no one was there. She decided to open the door a crack and she saw an envelope was taped to the door. Beat decided to grab the envelope.

Beat turned around and Ang was just coming into the kitchen.

Ang asked, "Who is it, sweetie?"

"I don't know but there was an envelope taped to the door," replied Beat. She sat down next to Ang and they opened the envelope. There was a letter and a picture of Dani in the envelope.

The picture of Dani showed her all tied up, blindfolded, gagged, and the fly of her jeans was open. Dani was all wet in the picture. Of the skin visible, you could see a bruise on Dani's left cheek.

"Mom, I don't like the look of Dani in the picture," said Beat, becoming frightened again.

"Me neither, sweetie," replied Ang, "What does the letter say?"

Beat unfolded the letter and put it flat on the table. It read:

To Ang and Beat,
I want $5,000,000 dollars or you will not see your daughter / sister alive again.
I want the money on Friday, October 17th.
Only Beatrice can come with the money.
The money must be in cash!
Do Not tell the police.
I will call you on Thrusday to make sure you have the money.
I will tell you on Thursday where to meet and when.
If you do not bring the money,
YOU DO NOT SEE YOUR DAUGHTER / SISTER EVER AGAIN!!!

The letter was typed and there was no address or anything.

Beat turned to Ang with terror written all over her face, "Mom, I DO NOT want to go and meet this insane person. Please mom, I don't want to go."

Ang could tell that Beat did not want to go even before Beat said anything.

"I am calling the police right now!" Ang replied with terror in her eyes.

"But, mom, the note said not tell the police. I will go, but we don't have that kind of money either," replied Beat.

"I am doing this for your safety and for Dani's safety, I want her BACK NOW!!! I have to call." She went over to the phone and dialled the police. "Hello, police station?"

"Yes, this is the police station. How may I help you madam?" the voice on the other line said.

"Today, a daughter of mine came over and talked to Constable Wong about another missing child. The child, Dani, was kidnapped and I now have a ransom letter and a picture of my kidnapped daughter. Can you help us?"

"Madam, we can come over tonight and take a look at the note or do you want to wait until tomorrow morning?"

"I would feel better if someone came over now," replied Ang. The police asked for their address and they said they would be over right away.

Ang remembered something, "This person rang the doorbell at midnight and woke my other daughter and I up."

"Thank you madam, and we will knock on your door instead of using the doorbell," the voice on the other line said.

Ang hung up and turned to Beat, "The police are coming over and they are going to knock on the door. Would you please answer the door when they come?"

"I guess I could," replied Beat. Turning to Ang, she said, "Mom, I am really scared!"

About five minutes later, there was a knocking at the door. Beat went to answer the door and knew who it was but she still looked through the peep hole. She opened the door to the police officers.

"Hello, is this the Ven's household?"

"Yes it is, and you may come in. My mom is waiting for you," replied Beat. The police officers entered the house.

"Aren't you up a little late, young lady?" asked one of the officers.

"Yes, but I am mighty worried about my sister."

"Hello, madam, are you the one who called about Dani?" asked the other officer.

"Yes, I did call. And here is the picture and the letter regarding Dani," said Ang, Looking towards Beat, Ang said, "This is my daughter, Beat, and I am Ang."

One of the police officers tried to dust the doorbell but it was not going that well. The other officer was reading the letter and looking at the picture.

"John, better get over here and read this letter. It looks pretty serious," said the officer at the table. "Ang and Beat, this person is serious by the looks of this letter. Also, tomorrow, I mean today, is Thursday. That means this person is going to call sometime today. We have to think fast."

John was looking at the letter, by this time, and he said, "I just thought of something -- Pete, how does this sound if we get a tracking system in to here and when he calls we will be able to trace the call to the location?"

"That sounds like a good idea, John," replied Pete, "How does it sound to you, two?"

"OK," said Ang.

"Sure," said Beat.

Pete continued, "Beat, that means you should stay home in case the phone rings during they day. Also, you know other people numbers better, too, if anyone else calls. Because we do not know who your friends are. How does that sound to you Beat?"

"Alright, I get to miss school for my own sister," replied Beat.

"That sounds good with me, because she also needs her sleep," said Ang. "Last night we didn't get to sleep until after four and today will be the same thing, by the looks of the time right now."

Pete went back to the police station to get a tracking system. John decided to stay at the house and wait for Pete. Pete came back and they were setting up the tracking device when Beat said:

"Mom, I am going to bed. I am really tired. Thank you police officers for coming over and taking care us they way you are." Beat went upstairs to bed and she fell fast asleep.

Ang was downstairs and she asked Pete, "Who is going to stay here?"

Pete looked at John, and John looked Pete. John replied, "Let's draw sticks to find out who will stay. Someone has to go to the station, incase another emergency arises."

John and Pete drew sticks, and John drew the smaller of sticks. John said, "This place has more excitement than the station most nights. I will stay. Besides I think your daughter feels comfortable around me."

"I think so, too," responded Pete and Ang.

Ang decided to go to bed too, but just as she was about to leave, John said:

"Ang, we have to do something about the money. Do you have any ideas?"

"No," replied Ang, "I don't even have nearly enough money to get by each month. I really don't know what to do."

"Ang, how did this person know your names, Beat's and yours?" asked Pete.

"I really do not know," Ang began to cry again. She put her face into the palms of her hands, "I'm sorry."

"It is perfectly ok to cry," replied John. "I would cry too if I were in your shoes."

"May be I should get to bed." Ang turned around and left. She had to get up in the morning to call the school and to get to work at a decent time.

*********************************************

Around two in the morning, Dani heard a vehicle pull up. She did not know what to expect.

The father came in and saw Dani awake. He said, "I thought you would be asleep you little piece of shit!"

He came up close to Dani and he threw her down on the ground. This time her face was on the ground and the father did not pick her up. He kicked Dani in the stomach and in her face. There was blood coming from Dani's nose and she was knocked out again.

The father said, "I don't want you, you little piece of shit. If your mother doesn't get the money, I am going to kill you. I have a rifle waiting to be used." He left.

The next morning, Dani was still on the ground. The father came back in and this time he had a whip with him. He sat Dani back upright and he pulled up her sweater. He brought the whip back and he swung it forward and the whip hit Dani on the stomach. He did this a few more times until there was blood. He knocked the chair down with the last blow and the father came up to Dani's head and kicked her head with a mighty blow. Dani was knocked unconscious.

*********************************************

Ang woke up the next morning and she saw Beat was already up. "Mom," she said, "I woke up this morning with a sudden jolt. I have a feeling something really awful has happened to Dani."

"Like what?"

"I really don't know, and I already have told John this too."

"Well, I have to call the school and tell them that you will not be going today to school. Is that still ok with you?" asked Ang.

"Yeah it would be ok, and I don't think it would do me any good, if I did go," replied Beat.

"Why?" asked Ang curiously.

"I am too worried about Dani, that I don't think I could concentrate anyways."

"I see your point, sweetie. Will you call me as soon as this person calls you?" asked Ang.

"Yeah, I will," said Beat.

The call came at three thirty and John was still there. Beat answered the phone, knowing this was the dreaded call.

"Hello?"

"Hello, is Beat there?" a muffled voice was speaking.

"Speaking."

"I want you to meet me at the park at seven thrity tomorrow night. No earlier and no later. Understand?"

"Yeah, I guess so."

"Seven thirty at the park." The man hung up the phone.

Beat slowly hung up the phone, she turned to John. She said, "I am supposed to meet the man at the park at seven thirty tomorrow night. He also said no earlier and no later. Did you get the number, John?"

"No, I didn't the call was way too quick," responded John.

Beat called her mom and told her the man had called. When she was done with the call, she looked at John. She asked, "John, what about the five million dollars he wants. What are we going to do?"

"To tell you the truth, I don't know yet."

"Oh no," said Beat, "I am never going to see my sister again." She ended up turning away and crying once again.

John called the station and asked them if they had any ideas. One of the officers said, "We could place fake money into a brief case."

"That is a good idea, but how are we going to get the fake money in twenty four hours?" asked John. Again, the police officers were stumped.

At the office, some else piped up, "I know someone who makes fake money. He just does for the fun of it. I will call him and sees what he says." A few moments later he came back on the phone, "It is a go."

"Thank you Lord," replied John.

*********************************************

Dani did not wake up. She was out. The man did not give a care if she lived or not.

*********************************************

That evening, Ang and Beat sat up together talking about what to do the next day when Beat was to meet this man. However, they went to bed early that night because they have not been sleeping good.

Beat was in bed for about four hours and she kept tossing and turning. Around two a.m., Beat just couldn't sleep. She decided to go downstairs and warm up some milk.

She went down the stairs and turned the corner and Ang was at the table writing something. Ang turned around and saw it was Beat.

Ang said, "Honey, I have thought of something for tomorrow night. I am wondering if the station has any other sort of tracking device because I do not want to lose you to this man too."

"I don't know, mom," replied Beat, "You may want to call the station to find out."

Ang did that and the police officer said, "We do have one tracking device, but we don't know for sure if it still works. Do you want us to come over tomorrow at three thirty and test it out on your daughter?"

"Yes, you may," answered Ang, "And thank you very much." Ang and Beat talked for a little while longer. They talked about what to do tomorrow and eventually they decided it was time to go back to bed. As Ang was leaving the kitchen, she threw away the piece of paper.

The next day, Beat stayed home and she told Ang this. Ang felt it was ok for Beat to stay home for another day.

At three thirty, Constable Wong came by with the tracking device. Constable Wong helped Beat to put the device on her back. Then, Beat went for a walk around the block and Constable Wong stayed in the house to see if she was able to track Beat.

Beat came back to the house and asked, "So did it work, Constable Wong?"

"It worked beautifully," answered Constable Wong. "I think it will be able to work tonight."

At seven o'clock that night, there was a knocking at the door. Beat went to the door and looked out the peep hole. There was Constable Wong, John, Pete and two other officers.

"Come on in," Beat said.

"We came by to tell you that we will be at the park in half an hour and we are in an ordinary looking van," said Constable Wong. "We are here for you and we will look after your daughter, Ang."

"I want to come, too," said Ang. "I don't want my other daughter taken away from me,too."

"Well, I guess there is room for one more," replied John. "But it will be tight in there. Beat, you know that you are riding your bike there?"

"Yep, and I am ready as I'll ever be," Beat said nervously.

"Well, we better get going to the park. Are you ready, Ang?"

"Yes, but we'll have to leave my wheelchair here, I guess," replied Ang.

Beat left shortly after the officers and Ang had left. Beat went to grab her bike and left for the park. To get to the park from Beat's, it takes about ten minutes.

Beat got to the park at exactly seven thirty and two vans were there. One was on one side of the park and the other van was on the sidewalk to get into the park.

Beat walked up to a bench and sat down. There she waited and she saw a man walk towards her.

Beat grabbed for the brief case and noticed that she had forgotten it at home.

The man asked, "Do you have the money?"

"Yes, but it's at home," replied Beat.

The man became very angry and grabbed Beat by the arm. He yanked at the arm and took her over to the waiting van. The van was the one that was on the sidewalk.

In the van, the man kicked Beat in the stomach and tied her wrists together. Then the man got into the driver's seat and drove out of town.
