Rape
By Diana
It was a Monday, November thirteenth, when Elle Brook decided to go outside for a walk in the early morning. Elle is sixteen and she is very artistic and an excellant athlete. Elle plays soccer during the summer and hockey during the winter.
Anyways, Elle decided to go for a long walk to the river and back. Elle lives on a farm that is a kilometer from the river and half a kilometer to the town called Courage.
Elle was about halfway to the river when she thought she heard someone behind her. She looked back and she was sure she did not see anyone there. Elle began to walk faster and she thought she heard something again. She looked back . . .
There was a six foot man standing about five feet behind her. The man had a pistol and it was pointed directly at Elle. Elle froze, she had no idea what to do. The man walked toward her and said:
"If you come with me, nothing serious will happen to you." He grabbed Elle's arm and dragged her to a well-producing field. The man brought out a blanket from his knapsack and laid it on the ground. Elle saw the blanket had a lot of old, crusty blood on it. As the man was finishing straightening the blanket, he brought the pistol back up into Elle's face. Out of the knapsack, he pulled out a rope.
"Lie down on your stomach, you little whore," the man yelled at Elle. He took the rope and tied Elle's wrists together.
"Flip over!" the man ordered. The man laid down on top of her and began to rub her slowly over her clothing, but the hands slowly went under her clothing.
"No! Stop it! No! GET OFF ME!" yelled Elle at the top of her voice and she kicked her feet.
"Shut up! No one is going to hear you for miles around, so shut the HELL up!" the man yelled back.
He raped Elle. After he was done, he cut the rope on Elle's wrists and he got up and dressed.
"Don't tell what happened or something worse will happen," the man told Elle. He grabbed his blanket, rope, pistol, and knapsack, and fled.
Elle was lost, she did not know what to do. She was all alone and naked. She slowly got dressed and was in terrible pain. Her mind was in turmoil.
Elle walked to the road laeding to the river and to her home and she turned in the direction of her home. She walked home very slowly. She was too stunned to notice anything around her. Elle was afraid of what her mother and her friends were going to say.
When she entered the Brook's home, Elle walked right by her mother and went to her room to change. But she had a shower first and then she got changed. She grabbed her books for school and she walked right by her mother again. She got on her bike in pain and left for school.
Her mother, Patti, was stunned because her daughter never walks right by her without saying something.
Elle rode her bike to school and when she was there, she parked her bike in the rack. She still wasn't with it when she bumped into Laura Wok, Elle's best friend.
"Elle, are you alright?" aked Laura.
Elle walked by her and into school. Elle stopped at her locker and Laura asked again:
"Are you alright, Elle?" and Elle did not respond. Laura was concerned and took Elle's hand.
Elle cringed and fell to the floor. There she curled up into a ball. Laura went to the nurse's office.
"Miss Davis, something is the matter with my friend. She is out in the hall," said Laura, who was shaking herself. Continuing, she said, "Elle walked right past me and will not say a word. Will you come out and see if she will talk to you?"
"Sure, I will, and lead me to her," said Miss Davis. With that they were on a run down the hallway to where Elle was still sitting.
"Elle, can you hear me?" No response. Miss Davis held Elle's hand. "Elle, if you can hear me squeeze my hand." Still no response. Turning to Laura, she said, "Go get the principal and tell him to come here as fast as he can."
Laura turned and ran to the principal's office. By the time she got there, she was out of breath but she was able to tell the principal to come with her now because there was an emergency. The principal dropped everything and ran with Laura back to Elle.
Miss Davis told him that elle is not paying attention to her or anyone else. She asked, "Should we take her to the hospital?"
Mr. Bis said, "May be we should trying to get hold of her mother and then go from there." Mr Bis went back to his office and called Mrs. Brook, but she was no home.
Mr. Bis went back to Elle and told Miss Davis that no one was home. He turned to Laura and said, "Laura, you are missing your classes, you better go."
"Mr. Bis, can I please stay here with my friend til she leaves?" asked Laura.
"I guess but will you do something for me?"
"Yes. Just name it."
"Will you go to my office and tell the secretary to get the stretcher. Then bring it here, because we are going to take Elle to the hospital."
Laura left and Mr Bis turned to Miss Davis saying, "Something is not right and I know it is no small deal. Something traumatic occured to Elle."
Laura came back with the stretcher. The three of them got Elle lying on the board and they strapped her down. Mr. Bis went to the closest classroom and got three Grade Twelve guys to carry Elle out to the waiting Miss Davis' van.
Mr Bis told Laura to go to his office and get a late slip from the secretary and go to the class she had missed so far.
Mr Bis and Miss Davis got into the van and drove Elle to the hospital. They went directly to the emergency enterance and carried Elle in.
When Elle entered nurses stopped what they were doing at the desk and came to help Mr Bis and Miss Davis. The nurses asked what happened and the two told the nurses that she came to school this way.
"Come to this room with her," the nurses replied. They took Elle off the stretcher and put her onto a bed.
The nurses did some tests and Elle still would not respond, even though she was wide awake. It seemed to them that she was in her own world. Elle was in another world of pain and confusion.
The emergency doctor came and did some more tests with Elle. After he was done, he asked Mr Bis to give the number of Elle's mother because Elle was going to stay in the hospital for a while.
Mr Bis gave him the number. The doctor told them there is nothing else to do, except to go back to school and keep things running there.
The doctor, Dr. Frel, said to Elle, "I am going to do a physical on you." Elle did not respond.
He took off Elle's clothing and noticed there were bruises and some blood on her body. He put Elle into a hospital gown and wanted to know if there was any sexual intercourse. He checked and there was intercourse and blood in that area.
Elle began to shiver and Dr. Frel looked up. There were tears coming down her face. Dr. Frel asked Elle, "Did someone hurt you, Elle?" Elle still did not respond. "Elle, I am going to admit you to the hospital for a day or two. Is that ok with you?" Still there was no response.
Elle was admitted to the hospital and Dr. Frel called Mr Bis at the school. Dr. Frel said, "Elle has been raped. She did not tell me but I did do a physical and there was evidence on Elle. There were bruises and blood."
"Oh my God!" responded Mr Bis in shock. "Is she going to stay at the hospital for a while?"
"Yes, she is and I am going to continue to try and get hold of Mrs. Brook. Is there a Mr. Brook?"
"According to her record, no, there is no Mr Brook in her family." responded Mr Bis. "Thank you doctor for calling us and please keep us up to date."
"You're welcome," responded Dr. Frel.
Mr Bis said into the intecom, "Can Laura Wok please come to the office immediately?"
Laura was in History class and people began to say, "Laura was bad", "Laura, you naughty girl", "Laura, your momma brought you your lunch you forgot at home".
Laura responded by saying, "Something serious has happened to a friend of mine. That's it!" And she stormed out of the room.
Laura got to the office and Mr Bis said, "Laura, something serious happened to Elle and she is going to stay at the hospital for a day or two."
"Will she be ok, Mr Bis?" asked Laura.
"I can't say for sure, but do you know what Elle's mom does in the day?"
"Yes, she works at Safeway."
"Thank you and we will give her a call. And, Laura, you may go to the hospital at noon and be with Elle for the rest of the day. She might talk to someone she trusts. Is that ok with you?"
"Yes, and thank you very much, Mr Bis," replied Laura.
At noon, Laura went directly to the hospital and there she met Elle's mother.
"Hello, Mrs. Brook. Have you heard anything about Elle's situation?" asked Laura.
"Laura, you may want to sit down and listen," replied Patti. "Laura, um, uh, Laura I'll be straight with you. This morning, Elle was raped."
"No, it can't be. It just can't be," said Laura, with her face in her hands. "Not to my best friend. Why Elle?"
"Laura, I have had those questions going through my mind ever since the doctor told me. Do you want to go in and just sit with her? She might talk to you."
"Ok," Laura said sullenly.
Laura entered the room, "Um, uh, hi, Elle, how are you? Oh, by the way, you missed absolutely nothing in English, Biology or History. All of it was really boring and Elle, I am here if you want to talk to me. I will listen and I will not judge you, Elle."
The whole day passed by and Elle would not say a word to anyone. Patti decided to leave for the night and Laura did not want to leave Elle's side, but Laura knew she needed some sleep.
Throughout the whole night, Elle did not sleep. The nurses always checked up on her and each time they looked in, Elle was wide awake.
The nurses talked to the doctor on duty and he said that she needs to sleeps, so they gave Elle some sleeping pills.
Elle was out like a light bulb in the morning and when she woke up, her mother and Laura were there.
Elle said to them, "I want to go home." Patti went out to find the doctor and told him that Elle wants to go home.
Dr. Frel said it was ok and got Patti to sign a release form.
Elle had been home for a few days and still was not saying much. She has been thinking a lot about life and if it was worth living. She decided it wasn't.
One afternoon she called Laura's house and knew no one would be home. However, there was an answering machine and she left a message to Laura, "Laura, I was raped by a man and I cannot live with the guilt, so I have decided to kill myself. You are a really good friend and I am sad to say 'Goodbye' but I need to for my own sake. I am glad I have got to know you and I hope to see you once again. And, Laura, please do not forget me and I will be with you always. Your friend forever, Elle."
Elle wrote a message to her mother. It said: "Mom, I can't live with the guilt of the rape and what I could have done to stop it, so I have decided to end my life. Mom, please remember me always. Love, Elle"
With that, she got a butcher knife and killed herself, by slitting both of her wrists.
There was a funeral service at the school to remember Elle, and Patti and Laura spoke on Elle's behalf. Mr Bis spoke about all of her successes at school.
Laura had something special to say to the students that day, "Elle told me to remember her always and I want to do just that. I want to wear a purple ribbon, on her behalf, and all the others who want to, come to me after the service and I will hand out ribbons. I chose the color purple because that was Elle's favorite color. Please remember Elle always. Thank you for coming out."
Many people came up to Laura after the service and they got ribbons. They wore the ribbons 'til they fell off, and then, they just got a new ribbon to put on.
Two weeks later the rapist was caught in the act of rape on another young girl. He was held in prison until his plea. He did not plead guilty, and a trial was held. He was found guilty by judge and jury. The rapist was charged for at least ten accounts of assault and rape on women under the age of eighteen. He was given the sentence that he was a dangerous offender and was never to be released.
